Falls of Ohio Trip Opens Fall Birding Season
Audubon Society of Kentucky opens its fall birding season with a trip to Falls of the Ohio, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Saturday, Sept. 5.  Led by Jackie Van Willigen, the birders will meet at 8 a.m. at the Bakhaus Bldg. on Leestown Rd.
entucky,   Scopes are useful at the Falls, where the birds are some distance away.  There is a visitors center and small museum.

The fall activity schedule includes two walks at Lexington Cemetery, two at Spindletop Farms, and one at Berea College Woods.  The popular trip to Shakertown with birding followed by lunch in the Trustees Inn is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, led by Joe Swanson.  Call him to make reservations for lunch.

Two longer day trips are on the schedule, one to Muscacatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Southern Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 22,  and another to Peabody Wildlife Management Area in Muhlenberg County Dec. 12.  The main purpose of this trip is to see short-eared owls which are best seen at dusk, so the group will leave Lexington at 2 p.m. and return after dark.  Peabody WMA is on Central time; see December newsletter for more information.

The 109th Christmas Bird Count will be Saturday, Dec. 19.

The complete fall activity schedule with details is inside this newsletter.

Fall Bird Seed Sales to Be Oct. 17, 24
Dates for the Fall Bird Seed Sales will be two Saturdays, Oct. 17 and  24,  8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Watch for flyers in the mail in October about this event.  The Fall and Winter Seed Sales are our only fund-raising activity.  The sales are cosponsored with Buckley Hills Audubon Society.

Southern States will again be the location for the sales, but the store has moved to a new site, 2570 Palumbo Drive.  You can reach it by taking E. New Circle Rd or Man-o-War to Palumbo, or going through town, from Richmond Rd. to old Todds Rd., then left on Palumbo.

The store has a big blue sign and is across the street from International Paper Co.  The move from Pine St. was made necessary by road construction.

Plan to volunteer to work on the sale days and to stock up on seed.  Watch the ASK listserver and flyers for further information regarding kinds of seed and prices
