Pine Mountain Legacy to Be Program Topic at Spring Luncheon

ASK birders have spent many pleasant Spring Weekends birding at Pine Mountain State Park and environs.   The program for the Spring Luncheon and general meeting Saturday March 7 at Spindletop Hall will give us a new perspective through the Pine Mountain Legacy Project and the work of the Kentucky Natural Lands Trust.

Donna Alexander, program manager for KNLT, will be the speaker, using pictures and stories to showcase Pine Mountain, its plants, and its animals.  The Legacy Project spans five Kentucky Counties, part of Virginia, a distance of about 110 miles and more than 151,000 acres.  It supports some of the region’s most ecologically sensitive areas including pristine mountain streams, old growth forests, pine barrens, and bogs.

The annual meeting begins at 11 a.m. with a business session to elect officers, hear reports, and discuss finances.  At noon, luncheon is served.  The program beginning at 1 p.m. will conclude the day’s activities.

The menu this year features country pot roast, green salad, green beans, mashed potatoes, and for dessert, deep dish caramel apple pie (price $25).  The vegetarian alternative is vegetarian lasagna with the same salad and dessert ($23).

Spindletop Hall is on Iron Works Pike between Newtown and Georgetown Rds.  To make reservations, complete the form on the back of the newsletter and mail with check to treasurer Jim Williams.  He must have your reservation in hand by Wed. March 4.

New Ground for Spring Weekend: Blue Licks Battlefield State Park

ASK birders will break with tradition and explore new territory when we go to Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park May 1-3 for the Spring Weekend.  Reservations in the Audubon Society block of rooms must be made by Tues. March 31.

Room rates in the lodge are $79.95 double (2 people).  The lodge gives senior or AAA discounts.  Cabins are $165.  There is a campground.  Reservations can be made by telephone, 800/443-7008 or online at www.parks.ky.gov.
Established as a state park in 1927,  Blue Licks Battlefield didn’t become a resort park, with lodging and dining facilities, until 1999.  Although small (148 acres), Blue Licks is well supplied with interesting features including a salt springs, Revolutionary War battlefield, Pioneer Museum, and a nature preserve where you can find  Short’s goldenrod, the first plant in Kentucky placed on the rare plant list of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Blue Licks is 48 miles northeast of Lexington on U.S. 68 in Robertson County, bordering the Licking River.
The bird life is waiting for us to discover it.

Naturalist Paul Tierney will present a program Saturday night.  Birding will take place all weekend till check-out time Sunday, but there will be breaks for a potluck picnic dinner Friday evening and a Derby party Saturday afternoon. Program details will appear in the April newsletter.
