A Day in the Woods
ASK Christmas Bird Count Will Be Dec. 20
ASK will hold its Christmas Bird Count all day Saturday, Dec. 20, as part of the National Audubon Society’s 108th annual count. Escape the holiday madness and join us for a day in the winter woods.
Birders must be assigned to a specific area and team within the count territory, which is part of Fayette and Jessamine County. If you can help, call Betty Maxson (948-1824) or Dave Svetich (533-5683). The more birders we have, the more birds we will find.
The day officially begins with breakfast at Denny’s on S. Limestone near Southland Dr. at 7 a.m. Some teams may prefer to go directly to the field. We bird in all kinds of weather until the territory is covered, but we do stop for lunch, and those who can only give part of a day may leave early.
Now that so much of the country has become residential, feeder counts are especially important. If you live in the count area, observe the birds in your yard in the 24 hours and report them to Betty that evening. You might have a species that no one else saw. The territory is a 15-mile radius of East Hickman Church on Tates Creek Rd.
The traditional potluck dinner and count tally will end the day at 6 pm at Jackie and John Van Willigen’s,
660 Lakeshore Drive. Bring a salad or dessert. The entrée will be provided. Park only on one side of the street.
Do you know children 7-14 who might enjoy their own bird count? A California Audubon chapter has started a Kids Count with great success. Betty Maxson would like to hear from anyone interested in starting a Kids Count here. It would be on a different day and might have a different structure. Call her if you would like to help start one here.
